best time of day for a family photo session at coogee or bronte beach
Early morning and late afternoon are generally the best windows for a beach family session; the light is softer and warmer at both ends of the day, rather than the harsh overhead glare of midday. Beyond the light itself, there are a few other practical reasons one might suit your family better than the other.
morning vs late afternoon - the actual trade-offs
Early morning (roughly the first hour or two after sunrise):
Beaches like Coogee and Bronte are quieter, with fewer people in the background and easier to move around freely.
Works well if you have young kids whose best mood window is earlier in the day, before nap time or general end-of-day tiredness sets in.
Softer light without needing to work around a crowd.
Late afternoon (roughly the last hour or two before sunset):
Warmer, golden light that a lot of people picture when they think "beach photos."
Better suited to families or couples who function better later in the day, or where timing needs to fit around school pickup, work, or other commitments.
Beaches tend to fill up more as the day goes on, especially on weekends in warmer months, so there's a bit more negotiating around other beachgoers.
Neither is objectively better, it comes down to your family's actual rhythm and what time of day you're all at your best, not just the light.
other things worth factoring in
Tide and conditions change seasonally, so exact timing shifts through the year rather than being a fixed clock time. This is worth talking through once we've picked a date.
Wind can be a bigger factor at an exposed beach location than time of day is, just something to keep in mind if hair or loose clothing matters to you.
Weekday vs weekend matters as much as morning vs afternoon if a quiet beach is the priority - a weekday morning is about as quiet as Coogee or Bronte gets (especially in winter!).
specific spots around Coogee
Beyond just "the beach," there are a handful of specific spots nearby that each bring something different to a session:
Koojah Cliff: the bushland and cliffs at the northern headland make for a wilder, more textured backdrop than the open sand, good for families who want to explore rather than just stand and pose.
Giles Baths: right at the water's edge, good for families or couples happy to get a bit adventurous with the waves.
Ross Jones Rockpool: the wall around the pool gives a bit of height and structure to work with, a nice change from flat beach.
Ivor Rowe: the cliffs and rock shelves further south are quieter and more secluded, good for a slower, more private feeling session away from the main stretch of Coogee Beach.
